How to Choose the Right Size for Your Restaurant Menu

Menu size is one of the most overlooked decisions in restaurant design. Too small and your menu feels cramped and hard to read. Too large and it overwhelms guests and is awkward to handle at the table. Here is how to choose the right size for your concept.

Menu size is one of the most overlooked decisions in restaurant design. Too small and your menu feels cramped and hard to read. Too large and it overwhelms guests and is awkward to handle at the table. Here is how to choose the right size for your concept.

The 7 Standard Restaurant Menu Sizes

We offer 7 standard sizes that cover the full range of restaurant menu formats. Here is what each size is best suited for:

4.25" × 11" — Drink Menus & Inserts

This narrow portrait format is ideal for drink menus, cocktail lists, dessert menus, and table inserts. It is compact enough to sit alongside a full menu or stand in a table tent holder. Works well for bars and cocktail lounges that want a dedicated beverage menu.

5.5" × 8.5" — Compact Table Menus

Half-letter size is a popular choice for casual restaurants, cafes, and quick-service concepts. It is easy to handle, easy to store, and works well for menus with a focused selection. Also a good choice for table tents and smaller format presentations.

8.5" × 11" — The Most Popular Size

Letter size is by far the most popular restaurant menu size. It is the standard that most guests expect, it is easy to design for (most design software defaults to letter size), and it provides enough space for a full menu without feeling oversized. If you are unsure which size to choose, start here.

8.5" × 14" — Legal Size for Full Menus

Legal size provides significantly more space than letter without jumping to a full tabloid format. It is a good choice for restaurants with extensive menus — multiple categories, detailed descriptions, and food photography — that need more room without going oversized.

11" × 17" — Tabloid for Large-Format Menus

Tabloid size makes a statement. It is the format of choice for restaurants that want their menu to be an experience in itself — large food photography, bold typography, and generous white space. Works well for upscale casual and fine dining concepts.

12" × 18" — Oversized Premium Presentation

Slightly larger than tabloid, this size is used by restaurants that want a truly premium, oversized menu presentation. The extra space allows for even larger photography and more generous layout. A bold choice that communicates quality.

13" × 19" — Maximum Impact

Our largest standard size. This format is for restaurants that want their menu to make the biggest possible visual impression. Note that the actual printed area is 12.5" × 18.5" with bleeds — this is the maximum size our presses accommodate.

How to Choose: Key Questions

  1. 1.How many items are on your menu? More items need more space. A 30-item menu fits comfortably on 8.5×11. A 60-item menu may need 8.5×14 or larger.
  2. 2.Do you use food photography? Photography needs space to breathe. If your menu features photos, go at least one size larger than you think you need.
  3. 3.What is your restaurant's style? Fine dining calls for generous white space and larger formats. Casual concepts can work well with compact sizes.
  4. 4.How will menus be stored? Larger menus are harder to store and transport. If you have limited storage space, a compact size may be more practical.
  5. 5.Do you use menu covers? If menus will be inserted into covers, the cover size determines your menu size.

Folded Menu Formats

If you want a bi-fold or tri-fold menu, you need to choose our 10 mil soft foldable synthetic material — it is flexible enough to fold naturally. Our 15 mil rigid material is not suitable for folding. A common approach is to print an 8.5×11 menu on 10 mil soft and fold it in half to create a 5.5×8.5 bi-fold presentation.
